TermSmith is a vocabulary learning app published by Pursue Learning Ltd, a New Zealand company. This policy explains what information TermSmith collects, how it is used, and what choices you have. We have written it in plain language so it is easy to understand.

What we collect and why
Short version: TermSmith does not require an account, does not collect your name or email, and stores your learning progress on your device only.
Learning progress
Your flashcard progress, study streaks, spaced repetition data, and session history are stored locally on your device using AsyncStorage. This data never leaves your device and is not sent to any server.
AI sentence marking
When you use the "Use in a Sentence" or "Command Words" practice modes, the sentence you type is sent to our marking service (hosted on Cloudflare Workers) for AI-powered feedback. The sentence is processed in real time and is not stored after the response is returned. We do not keep a record of what you write.
The AI marking service uses Anthropic's Claude language model to generate feedback. Anthropic's privacy policy applies to this processing. Sentences are not used to train AI models.
Advertising (free tier)
If you use TermSmith on the free tier, banner advertisements are displayed by Google AdMob. AdMob may collect device identifiers, IP address, and general usage data to serve and measure ads. Google's privacy policy applies to this data.
If you subscribe to TermSmith Pro, no ads are shown and no ad-related data is collected.
Subscriptions
Subscriptions are managed by RevenueCat and processed through Apple's App Store. RevenueCat receives a pseudonymous app user ID and purchase receipt to manage your entitlement. RevenueCat does not receive your name, email, or Apple ID. RevenueCat's privacy policy applies.
Push notifications
TermSmith can send a daily study reminder via local push notifications. These are scheduled entirely on your device and do not involve any server. You can disable them in your device's notification settings at any time.
Audio pronunciation
Pronunciation audio files are bundled with the app and play locally. No data is sent when you listen to a pronunciation.
Analytics and crash reporting
TermSmith does not include any third-party analytics or crash reporting SDKs beyond what Apple provides by default through App Store analytics (which you can opt out of in your device settings).
Children's privacy
TermSmith is rated 12+ and is designed for secondary school students. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Because TermSmith does not require an account and stores data locally, we have no way to identify a user's age. If you believe a child under 13 has provided personal information to us, please contact us and we will investigate promptly.
Data storage and security
All learning data is stored locally on your device. We do not operate a user database or cloud storage for TermSmith. The only data that leaves your device is:
- Sentences submitted to the AI marking service (processed in real time, not stored)
- Ad-related data collected by Google AdMob (free tier only)
- Purchase receipts processed by RevenueCat and Apple (subscribers only)
Your rights under the NZ Privacy Act 2020
Under the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020, you have the right to access, correct, and request deletion of personal information we hold about you. Because TermSmith stores your learning data locally on your device, you can delete it at any time by uninstalling the app. If you have questions about any other data, contact us at [email protected].
International users
TermSmith is published from New Zealand. If you use the app from outside New Zealand, the AI marking service and ad networks may process data in other countries. By using the app, you consent to this transfer.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page will change. Continued use of TermSmith after a change means you accept the updated policy.
